Thunderpaw accepted the rebuke quietly. It made his nose sting like a swat had gone across there at first, and angry tumultuous bitter thoughts bubbled up into his mind. How am I supposed to know that what's good for a Warrior isn't necessarily good for a Medicine Cat? But than the Other voice in his mind, the one that sounded a great deal like his Father to him, spoke up as it usually did when he became angry or petulant. Perhaps the point is that you SHOULD know these things Thunderpaw, it might be the difference between Life and Death for you or another cat someday. Thunderpaw immediately felt the anger and hurt start ebbing away at this thought. After all, most Warriors didn't have this training with a Med Cat like he was getting just now, there were lessons to learn here that would aid him as a Warrior and he needed to take advantage of them. Life wouldn't always be fun and games with someone else taking charge. It was a bit of a sobering thought for such a young apprentice.
Most of Thunderpaw's previous joviality returned within a few moments, but he still seemed to be preoccupied, as more adult thoughts swirled through his mind than he was used to. Following the old Medicine Cat's line of sight to the tall plants across the stream, he asked "Are those tall ones the horsetail, Lionsong?"

Lionsong Nodding at his question, Lionsong continued in her path so that she could pick a couple. "Yes, Thunderpaw. That is horsetail." Her deep mew was laden with the memories that his previous comment had dredged up, but was also far less scolding in nature than it had been. "Remember this plant if no others. If you are out of the territory and hurt your paws, this is what you should look for." Herbs to eat only kill warriors when taught to them, but traveling issues like sore or cracked paws are okay to teach because no cat will eat them. The leaves were a little taller than Lionsong, who used to be quite large before age curled her shoulders and tattered her ears. Biting through the highly bitter stems near the bottom, the medicine cat handed some to Thunderpaw and kept a bundle for herself. "Now we set them out to dry in then sun." Remembering at the last second about the poppy, the medicine cat blinked. "We should find the poppy near the camp where it's dry and sunny." Picking up her pile of herbs, Lionsong waited for Thunderpaw to get his pile ready and padded toward the camp and her den.

Thunderpaw nodded and actively tried to absorb the lesson. For sore paws use Horsetail, the tall fronds that grow near the river. The young apprentice curled his nose in disgust when he bit through the stem trying to arrange them in a bundle he could carry. The bitter taste almost made him want to hack up a hairball.
When he finished arranging his bundle of Horsetail it was haphazard and untidy, as opposed to Lionsong's meticulously neat bundle clenched in her mouth. But he was proud of it nonetheless and followed the old she-cat with as much of a smile peeking around the bundle as was possible.

Lionsong Shaking her head in amusement as apposed to the annoyance she had been showing most of the time, Lionsong kept pace next to Thunderpaw to keep an eye on him and the bundle he carried. As untidy as it was, it had not been horrible for a first try, although the old medicine cat would never day it out loud. When they made it to a spot that Lionsong knew poppy grew at, she dropped her bundle and plucked a couple of poppy heads from the small group of flowers. "It is easier to empty the plants in the camp as opposed to out here." The brown medicine cat explained as she tossed them onto her bunch of herbs and headed back toward the camp where she could dry the herbs outside of her den. Once at her den, Lionsong separated the herbs, piling certain types together so that they would dry in the sun evenly. "Put the herbs in their places to be dried and come help me pull the seeds free of the poppy."

"Yes Lionsong." Thunderpaw answered, jumping to his task with alacrity. He had watched her every move closely, trying to absorb everything she was doing. Thunderpaw carefully placed the herbs in sunny spots to dry out so they wouldn't rot and spoil than padded back over to the Medicine Cat who was already busy with the Poppy Seeds. "How do you separate them so fast Lionsong? Is there a trick to it?" he asked.

Lionsong Surprised that he didn't just hop into the task like the other apprentices have, the large brown she-cat blinked at Thunderpaw for a moment before beckoning him closer with her tail. There was a trick to it, but she wanted to see if he would notice what she was doing without being told. It was more for her amusement than anything that she remained quiet as he approached her. With a paw on the poppy head, Lionsong put just enough pressure to bend the center and started rolling it until some seeds came loose. She then grabbed it by what little stem was left and gently shook it between her paws to keep the seeds from rolling away all over the place. Almost at once, all of the seeds fell out and onto a dock leaf that Lionsong had pulled from her stores. She pulled one out for Thunderpaw and watched to see what he was going to do. Maybe he'd get it right, maybe he wouldn't. This should be interesting. The she-cat thought.

Thunderpaw watched what she did closely. Taking a flower and the dock leaf Lionsong had given him, he careful crushed the plant with his paw, exerting too much pressure almost at once. A few seeds rolled away from him lazily but he corralled them quickly enough. He than carefully lifted the flower head over the dock leaf and shook. Bits of broken flower fell into the dock leaf along with with seeds. Less clinically precise than the older and more experienced cat, many of the seeds managed to escape from him, but again he diligently hunted them down. Than he fussed with separating the other plant particles from the pile of seeds. "How was that Lionsong?" he asked, clearly impressed with himself. Even with the trouble he'd had, it was much faster than pulling them out one by one.

Lionsong The older she-cat shook her head when he crushed the flower, but gave him points for spending the time to actually separate the bad from the good afterward. In truth, it wasn't a horrible try for a first time and she sighed, taking the leaf just to make sure it was all separated. "You broke seeds." The brown medicine cat started. "You have the right idea, though. Don't push so hard, think of it as stalking prey." As confusing as that might be for him to understand at that second, Lionsong knew it would sink in. Paws had to be placed precisely and carefully when hunting. The same was true for healing. Taking both bundles into her stores, Lionsong made sure they were placed so that no seeds hit the floor. With the herbs they had gathered, Lionsong would be stocked up for at least a moon. Starclan permitting, maybe two with no serious injuries. "You've done enough. Go get something to eat." Thunderpaw had done fairly well, better than Lionsong would let him know about, and she might just ask him to go with her for herb collection from now on. He certainly enjoyed finding the herbs enough.

Thunderpaw nodded, having already mostly ascertained where he had gone wrong, though not yet the why exactly. He frowned when she compared it to hunting. He could sense certain similarities, but he wasn't quite making the full connection. Than again, he still stalked prey through the forest with as much a stealth as a grizzly bear with a beehive on it's head. He dipped his head to the old she-cat when she dismissed him. "Okay Lionsong. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with." And with that the little cat bounced away, almost skipping. But before eating himself he found a juicy robin and set it just at the entrance to Lionsong's den while her back was turned, for her to find and eat once she was finished.

Lionsong Nodding as he left, the elderly she-cat finished her work and turned to the den's entrance. The sweet scent of prey found it's way to her nose and Lionsong realized just how hungry she was. Snorting at herself for forgetting to eat like an excited kit, the brown Medicine cat got comfortable in front of the fresh-kill and ate her fill. Once full, she padded slowly to her nest and curled up to rest. Her tail rested over her nose and her eyes closed as she drifted into the blackness of a dreamless sleep.

"Hi Lionsong!" Thunderpaw sat at the entrance to the Medicine Cat Den bright and early the next day. With no assignments from his Mentor, he was back bugging Lionsong, seeing if there was anything he could help the old she-cat with today. Two mice sat next him, one for each of them, his usual rather goofy grin plastered across his face. "I brought you breakfast. Is there anything I can help you with today?"

Lionsong Popping her head up off of her paws as the younger tom spoke, she restrained a hiss of frustration and stood to stretch and pad to the entrance of her den. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, Lionsong looked down at the prey that Thunderpaw had brought to her for breakfast. "Really, Thunderpaw, At this rate you might as well sleep in my den." The older medicine cat teased roughly, her deep meow hinting at a gruff mix of amusement and frustration at being woken earlier than her usual active time. "No cat is injured, and my herb stores are full." The elderly she-cat tried to think of something for the apprentice to do to assist her. There was little for her to do with so few cats in the clan. No kits to check on or pregnant queens to give herbs. There were no elders besides herself, and the older she-cat glared to the right at the thought of calling herself an elder. "Nope. Nothing to do." Giving an amused huff, the she-cat padded back into her den, throwing a last comment over her shoulder. "Unless you want to learn the herbs and uses."

"Okay!" Thunderpaw said joyfully, jumping at the opportunity to learn something, anything. With Meadowstar missing, all of the warriors were busy, and the apprentice was beyond bored. "Sounds good to me Lionsong, where do we start?" he asked, giving her his rapt attention.

Lionsong Surprised by his enthusiasm, the elderly she-cat groomed her brown fur flat and padded into her herb store to pull a few non-dangerous plants out like poppy and marigold. There was also some colts foot and a small pile of frosty-green berries. Wanting to gage what he already had known or heard of, the she-cat sat them out and took a place on the opposing side of the herb-line. "Tell me, Thunderpaw, What do you know about these herbs." Her roughly deep meow was deepened by a tinge of sleepiness that still hung by a thread in her eyes and shape. Lionsong had carefully chosen each of these herbs because, as far as she knew, there were no look-alike poisons for each of these. It meant that even the stupidest warrior couldn't kill themselves while trying to pretend to be medicine cats. Although the thought of warriors eating the bitter herbs willingly made the older she-cat huff with amusement and her white-tipped muzzle twitched.

Thunderpaw recognized the Poppy and Marigold from their collections the day before and he eagerly shared this knowledge with the Medicine Cat. "Those are easy! We just collected them yesterday! The seeds are the Poppy, and the bright flowers are Marigold." Their uses were harder. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to think. "Poppy seeds are for pain, right? And to help you sleep when your sick? And I think the marigold helps heal wounds?" The young apprentice eyed the other two. "I don't have any idea what the berries are Lionsong. I think the other one is Horsefoot? Or Cowfoot is it?" he asked uncertainly.
